Join us for a special wine dinner at Gemma with Sam Bilbro of Idlewild on Monday, March 7, 2016 at 6:30 P.M.
Antonio Galloni writes “Bilbro has the rare ability to craft absolutely delicious wines from obscure grapes (in California)… Readers who can find these wines should not miss them, as they are terrific. Carignan – 93 points, Barbera – 92 points.”
Bilbro comes from a long family tradition of wine making, as his father, Chris Bilbro had founded Marietta Cellars in 1979. Having grown up surrounded by his father’s vineyard, and exposed to the exquisite wines of the Piedmont region, Sam decided to focus on the grape varieties of Piedmont, which are well suited to the growing conditions in Northern California. These grape varieties include Arneis, Cortese, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo, among others.
“Idlewild’s focus is two-fold: First, exploring Italy’s Piedmont varietals as a way to further California’s wine spectrum, and second, paying tribute to California’s viticultural past by seeking out great yet uncommon old vine plantings.”
